What are Regional Tournaments?Upper Deck Entertainment's Premier Tournament series starts with Regional Tournament weekends. These events are open to all players and are run using the Swiss pairing format, so you can play through each round and never be eliminated. Regional Tournaments are a great place to test your new deck strategies and bring your play skills to the next level!
Winners of these Regional Tournaments are awarded entry into the National Championships taking place each summer.
How can I prepare to play in a Regional Tournament?Make sure you have a deck that is ready to play in a competive sanctioned tournament. To do this first check that you are not playing with more than one copy of any limited card. Also, if you are using sleeves be sure they are all the same color and size.
Format: Constructed: Regionals are using the new Advanced format for the constructed main event, this means the forbidden list will be in effect and will be enforced.
The Deck used for dueling must contain a minimum of 40 cards. Aside from this minimum limit, your Deck can contain as many cards as you like.
In addition to your Dueling Deck, you can also have 15 additional cards in a separate pile known as the Side Deck. The Side Deck allows you to modify your Deck to better suit your strategy during a Match.
Between Duels, you can exchange any card from your Side Deck with any card in your Deck - as long as you end up with the same number of cards that your Deck began the Match with.
The Side Deck you create must contain exactly 15 cards at the beginning of a Match. In other words, if you don't have enough cards to create a 15 card Side Deck, you cannot use one at all.
In any Match, the Deck and Side Deck combined cannot contain more than 3 copies of the same card. Also, be aware of Forbidden and Limited Cards (listed below). Japanese, Asian-English, Counterfeit cards, and Proxies are not allowed in any Official Tournaments.
What are the National Championships?Unlike Regional Tournaments, National Tournaments are larger, and even more exciting! For the United States National Championship, you must be qualified. There are a few ways to be invited to this event. The largest number of invitations will be awarded to winners of the hundreds of Regional Tournaments taking place each year. The highest rated players in the country will also be invited to compete with their fellow excellent players.
The Forbidden List will be used at regional and national events, and the World Championship.
