| When I ran a Team Trial (May 2000) for the Pittsburgh Team Grand Prix these were the instructions I received from Wizards
of the Coast. While originally the instructions called for cutting to the top four and running
two rounds of Rochester Draft, I received verbal confirmation that it was acceptable to cut to
the top two teams and run one draft. Everything that I have seen subsequently leads me to believe that these instructions
also apply to Team PTQs. Timing and Setup
Number of Swiss Rounds
Registering to Compete - Any team wishing to compete must register a three
person team. All members must be in good standing with the DCI. Registering Decks - Each team opens 2 Masques tournament packs and 4 boosters(boosters
depended on what expansion sets were available, I used 4 Nemesis, but when Prophecy became available,it
switched to 2 Nemesis and 2 Prophecy). Teams register the total of all cards. Deck Construction - Teams may talk during deck construction in the Swiss portion
of the tournament. Teams may not talk during play in any round, except to report game scores and give very general
comments (ex."good luck"). Players get 45 minutes to build and record decks. They may
receive any amount of basic land. Each player builds (and records) a minimum 40 card main deck. Each
player has a separate decklist. Any cards not used in the main decks must be used in someone's
sideboard. Sideboards must be registered. The total column would include all cards in main deck and
sideboard for each player. Used column would include all cards in that player's main deck only. Communication - Players may talk during deck construction in the Swiss portion, but not
during deck construction in the Draft portion. Players may not talk to each other during play except
for very general comments (ex."Did you win?"). A player who gives strategy advice to another player during play receives an automatic game loss (judge's discretion of using the current game or the first game
of the next match). No verbal communication during the draft (More below) Rochester Draft Finals - Teams may use non-verbal communication only during the Rochester
Draft. They may not communicate during deck construction. At the draft table One team will be in seats 1-3 (players A-C
respectively), the other team will be in seats 4-6 (in A-C order as well). It is now the middle person in a team
that starts to draft. You flip a coin and the winning team decides which team's Player B
drafts first. Each person will play
the person across the table (ie 3 seats to the left or to the right of them). |
