Legends of May Tournament - Questions we were asked

  • first strike timing - Player A attacks with a 1/1 first strike creature and a 5/5 creature. Player B blocks the 5/5 with a 3/3 plain creature. First strike damage gets put on the stack. Can player B give the 5/5 creature first strike and not have the 5/5 creature do damage at all since first strike damage has already been dealt with?

  • Trample vs protection from color.- A 3/3 green trample creature attacks and is blocked by a 1/1 protection from green creature. What happens?

  • Mother of runes and changing the color of the source of damage: More of an explanation than an actual question here. The Mother of runes does not have to identify the color she is giving protection from until this ability resolves. So when her ability is activated you must name what creature she is targeting, but nothing else.
  • Barbed Wire: Artifact. At the beginning of each player's upkeep, Barbed Wire deals 1 damage to that player. 2: Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt by Barbed Wire this turn.
If your opponent controls the Barbed Wire, can you pay 2 mana to prevent the damage?

First Strike: No. Giving a creature first strike after first strike damage has been assigned (and resolved) does not prevent it from dealing regular combat damage.

Trample vs protection from color: You must assign enough damage to the 1/1 blocker to deal it lethal damage (just as if it did not have protection), the rest of the damage can be assigned to the player (trampling through). The protection that the 1/1 blocker has will reduce any damage assigned to it to zero so it will live, but it cannot absorb more damage than its toughness value.

Barbed Wire: You may not pay 2 to prevent the damage it deals because it does not say, "Any player may play this ability."
