Its recommended to read the following excerpts from the Comprehensive Rules first, review the card text and then try the questions.

419.7c Some prevention effects apply to damage from a specified source-for example, "The next time a red source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage." The source is chosen when the spell or ability resolves. If an effect requires a player to choose a source, he or she may choose either a permanent or a spell on the stack (including one that creates a permanent) or any card or permanent referred to by a spell or pseudospell on the stack.. If the player chooses a permanent or a permanent spell, the prevention will apply to the next damage from that card, regardless of whether it's from one of that permanent's abilities or combat damage dealt by it. It's possible for the source to be out of play by the time the spell or ability resolves.

419.3. There are no special restrictions on playing a spell or ability that generates a replacement or prevention effect. Such effects last until they're used up or their duration has expired.

Target
Whenever the word "target" appears in the rules text of a spell or ability, the controller of the spell or ability chooses something that matches whatever follows that word. This may be as simple as "target land" or more complex, such as "target tapped creature one of your opponents controls." The choice is made when playing the spell or ability, which "targets" whatever was chosen. A spell or pseudospell on the stack can't target itself.

Example Situation: Jon has two Story Circles in Play. He selected green as the color for the first Story Circle and red as the color for the second Story Circle. It is Dora's turn. She attacks with her Blastoderm and her Lava Runner.

1) Can Jon prevent the damage from the Blastoderm by using his Green Story Circle?
a. Yes
b. No

2) Will Jon have to sacrifice a land if he prevents the damage from the Lava Runner by using his Red Story Circle?
a. Yes
b. No

3) What is the functional difference between the way Story Circle works and the way Circles of Protection work?

a. Story Circle is not targeted, but Circles of Protection are targeted.
b. You name the source for Story Circle when it resolves, the source for the COP is named when you play the effect.
c. The source named for Story Circle must be in play when the effect resolves. COP's don't need the source to be in play for them to work.
d. There is no real functional difference.

BONUS Question: Can Kor Haven legally be used to prevent damage from a Blastoderm?
